What this means

A $100.00 purchase at 0% sales tax adds $0.00 in tax, for a total of $100.00.

  • The rate combines your state rate with any city, county, or district tax — adjust it to match your exact location.
  • Some items (groceries, prescriptions, clothing) are taxed at reduced rates or exempt in certain states.
  • Use “Remove tax from a total” to find the pre-tax price from a receipt.

How US sales tax works

Sales tax in the US is set at the state level, then topped up by local city, county, and district taxes. The rate you pay at the register is the combined total for that exact location, which is why it changes from town to town even within one state. To get an accurate figure, start with your state rate and add any local tax that applies where you are shopping.

Limitations & disclaimer

State pages are pre-set to the statewide statutory rate; they do not include every local surcharge or product-specific exemption. Rates change over time and by jurisdiction. This is an estimate — confirm the exact rate for your address and purchase with your state’s department of revenue.

FAQs

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the sales tax rate (as a decimal), then add it to the price. For example, $100 at 7% is $100 × 0.07 = $7 tax, for a $107 total. This calculator does it instantly, and can also work backwards from a tax-inclusive total.

What is the difference between state and local sales tax?

Most states set a statewide base rate, and cities, counties, and special districts can add their own local sales tax on top. The combined rate you actually pay is the state rate plus all applicable local rates, which is why two towns in the same state can charge different totals.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that Alaska allows local jurisdictions to levy their own sales tax, so you may still pay tax in some Alaskan cities.

Are all purchases taxed the same?

No. Many states exempt or reduce tax on essentials like groceries, prescription medicine, and sometimes clothing. Rules vary by state, so a full cart of goods may be taxed at different effective rates.
