How calculations work

All calculations run locally in your browser. We do not call external APIs or transmit your inputs.

How this calculator works

  1. Exclusive amounts: if Inclusive of GST is off, GST amount = amount × (rate / 100) and total = amount + GST.
  2. Inclusive amounts: if selected, GST amount = amount − (amount / (1 + rate/100)) and total = amount (GST included).
  3. Rounding: we round to two decimal places for currency display.

GST 2.0 rate categories (overview)

For this site we focus on the commonly-used public rates: 0%, 5%, and 18%. Examples below are informational only:

  • 0% (Exempt): essentials such as many basic food items, certain healthcare and education services are commonly zero-rated or exempt.
  • 5%: essential processed foods and select household items; a concessionary rate for basic goods.
  • 18%: the standard rate applied to a wide range of goods and services (electronics, consumer services, many retail items).

Note: exact classification for specific goods or services can vary. This summary is for guidance — consult official GST schedules or a tax advisor for precise classification and any cesses.

What this calculator does

This calculator computes GST amount and final price for a given taxable value and GST rate. It supports both GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive inputs to help businesses and consumers determine tax liabilities and final sale prices.

It is designed to be practical for day-to-day invoicing checks and quick price comparisons, helping small businesses and shoppers break down inclusive invoices or determine the tax component to be paid to the government.

Who should use this calculator?

Small business owners, invoicing staff, and consumers comparing prices should use this tool. It is useful for preparing estimates, invoices, or checking the tax component of a quoted price under Indian GST rules.

For businesses, it can speed up quoting and billing accuracy; for consumers, it separates the tax component so you can compare base prices across sellers who display inclusive pricing differently.

How this calculator works

If you enter a price exclusive of GST, the calculator multiplies the price by the GST rate to compute tax. For GST-inclusive prices it derives the tax portion by reversing the rate. Results include the tax amount and the net/gross totals accordingly.

The calculator accepts common GST rates (for example 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) but allows custom rates too. It does not apply cess or clearance-specific exemptions automatically—add any special charges manually to the input amount if needed.

How to interpret your result

The output displays the GST component and the final price. Use the exclusive mode to see tax to be added to a base price; use inclusive mode to separate tax from a quoted all-inclusive amount. Verify rates with current GST notifications.

If your invoice includes multiple line items with different GST rates, calculate each line separately and then sum totals; this tool focuses on single-line calculations for clarity.

Example

For a product priced at ₹1,000 with 18% GST (exclusive), the GST amount is ₹180 and the total price becomes ₹1,180. If ₹1,180 is an inclusive price, this tool will split it into ₹1,000 base and ₹180 GST when set to inclusive mode.

When invoicing a basket of goods with mixed rates, calculate each line's GST separately and total them; this calculator is useful for validating each line during invoicing.
